From working at a live music venue to working in the ruthless world of music television and now radio it has slowly come to my attention that this industry is not only fickle, but often fails to open its eyes to what Britain has to offer in terms of music.
It’s unbelievable when you come across a rare talent that makes you wonder why they aren’t playing the Royal Albert Hall and are superstar status. I found such a rareity yesterday at a showcase. I present exhibit A: Charlie Winston.
Charlie is an English singer-songwriter who has a string of massive hits under his belt – in France.
His debut album shot to the top of the French charts last year and spent a staggering 17 weeks in the top ten. He has had several hit singles off the album and is mobbed wherever he goes in France. And yet he’s lucky to even get one radio play over here. What’s even more mad, is nearly all of you will have heard his voice and know it well, his cover of the Spencer Davis Group’s “I’m a Man” was featured on a now banned car advert.
It is insane. So I have taken it upon myself to spread the word – to you… pass it on…
Like A Hobo (Charlies new Single – out in the UK July 12th)
How to combat this problem is simple. If you like Charlie’s new single, request it at your radio stations, record shops and spread that word far and wide! Do it with any records you hear and think are great and deserve a chance. It is embarrassing that such a great UK talent is not recognised by his own country.
We’ll happily have four Florence and The Machine, Dizzee Rascal or Girls Aloud singles in the chart at one point but there is no room for others to join the ranks. These acts all have their place, but the market is saturated with sound-alikes and greedy pop stars who will continuously collaborate with other greedy artists to dominate the top 40. And if all the radio stations have identical playlists nothing will change. It’s ridiculous and so frustrating; I thought the 1990’s happened 2 decades ago?
I Love Your Smile (Charlies last single… amazing and Audrey Tatou is in the freaking video!)
Kick The Bucket (my personal favourite)
